Whilst Borough probably isn’t one of the more internationally famous neighbourhoods for London property and it’s even been dubbed the ‘forgotten’ Borough when Londoners are home-hunting. Yet estate agents have been proudly championing the area’s many plus points for years now. This article gives you the ten reasons you really shouldn’t miss out looking for property in Borough - it really can be an absolute find.
1. Borough property is often a happy result of local regeneration - good quality conversions from former industrial units means you can often find loft style homes with high ceilings, generous floor spaces and ample natural light - all are highly prized features for any London property.
2. State schools in this neighbourhood fall within the top 25% of all local authority schools according to the national league tables. Last year 95% of parents were able to send their children to their preferred school.
3. The better local estate agents will show you around some of the most unique new builds in the London property scene, with excellent services at competitive prices to rent and buy.
4. New developments can benefit the whole neighbourhood. The local authorities are able to request that the construction is governed by ‘Section 106’ planning obligations. This means there must be some ‘compensation’ to the local community for any inconvenience caused, in the past this has included funding green spaces and school places.
5. All property in Borough lies in Southwark, where house prices increased respectably in the last two quarters, meaning they are retaining thei
r value in a steady manner.
6. Have a look at some online neighbourhood ‘profiles’. You’ll find they tend to characterise Borough as home to ‘prosperous professionals’ who work hard and value their leisure time.
7. London’s Metropolitan Police’s published statistics showed that Borough lacks the ‘High Crime’ rate blighting some inner London boroughs.
8. You are positively spoilt for museums to visit: they include the Clink Street Prison, Cuming Southwark history, Old Operating Theatre, Fashion and Textile, Design and Imperial War museums plus the London Bridge Experience, City Hall and Winston Churchill’s Britain At War Experience. You’re also close to the Tate Modern, the London Dungeons, the BFI Imax cinema, and the William Blake Sound and Mosaic Installation.
9. Borough food market is the undisputed home of London’s gourmets, quite literally worshipped by regular foodies and celebrities alike.
10. Local restaurants such a wide choice, should you look online for a local ‘fish restaurant’ you’ll find traditional fish and chip shops cheerfully listed next to oyster houses.
On top of all that, given the right estate agents, the property in Borough itself really can be stunning. If you’re new to the city, be warned London property varies in quality but the better local estate agents have set themselves good ground rules. At the very least, expect to be shown immaculately clean apartments, with gleaming modern kitchens and bathroom suites plus plenty of bright space. You should then be shown some enticing features, for example, perhaps a private balcony; a spacious bathroom with a designer suite; some lovely exposed brickwork and wooden beams and so on, on a home by home basis.
